Home Management Checklist

This home management checklist is a tool designed for you to consider or complete by yourself. Its aim is to help you figure out your strengths and weaknesses in this area.

Once you know your strengths and weaknesses, you can decide what you need to work on to prepare for your career and successfully search for a job. You can use this checklist to help you decide what goals you would like to establish in the home management area. Remember as you review the checklist that there are no right or wrong answers – only what is true for you.

You can print off the checklist and complete it off-line or simply read through the items and ask yourself whether you have the skills to perform the tasks or will require training or assistance to be able to accomplish them.

I take care of the following home management skills routinely:

  • Shopping (making lists of what you need and managing your money or credit/debit card to make purchases)
  • Safety routines (maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, keeping a fire extinguisher easily accessible, storing knives in a block or sheaths, keeping clutter to a minimum, unplugging appliances that are not in use, turning on burners only after pots or pans are in place, etc.)
  • Organizing and storing household goods and cleaning supplies
  • Trash removal (garbage and recycling)
  • Floor care (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and shampooing rugs as needed)
  • Furniture care (dusting and polishing as needed)
  • Kitchen chores (washing and drying dishes, cleaning out the refrigerator, cleaning the stove and oven)
  • Food preparation (organizing the pantry and refrigerator: storing food properly in containers or plastic wrap, cleaning vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat before eating or cooking)
  • Cooking (finding and following recipes; using the stove, oven, microwave, or similar tools to prepare foodstuffs)
  • Bathroom chores (scrubbing bathtub or shower stall, disinfecting toilet bowl, cleaning sink and counter space)
  • Maintaining household appliances and tools
  • Other (please consider or list your other home management skills that aren’t mentioned above)
